Frage:
wrap the strap around an oil filter

Nochmal ich und noch eine Werkstattfrage:
Jemand befindet in dem oil change place (s.u.) in der Grube unter einem Auto und nimmt einen Ölwechsel vor. Unter anderem: "... I reach up to wrap the strap around a dull orange oil filter ..."

The strap is part of a strap wrench (Band- oder Gurtschlüssel). You place the strap around the filter and pull the strap tight with the handle. As you continue to turn the handle, the oil filter will unscrew from the engine. As you said, she's standing in the pit (Abschmiergrube) under the car. The oil filter is over her head. There's no need to raise the hood.

If you do oil changes at home without the benefit of a pit, you do raise the hood and access the filter from above.

Thanks, Michael K. Excellent. Though it looks different in the YouTube video. They use a Hebebühne and still access the filter under the hood. Looks, as if they couldn't get at the filter otherwise. What they access from the underside is the Ölwanne. Maybe it's different with older models.

PS: I should have remembered our very first car:

Everything as you explained, Michael. Thanks again.

4;newcallas: Yes, the video you posted shows what your character does all day.

Coincidentally, I bought a new Ford Capri in Huntsville, Alabama in 1971. The local Lincoln-Mercury dealer sold and serviced them in an effort to get Americans interested in (to them) small cars other than the ubiquitous VW Beetle.  I drove my Capri happily for two years until it was hit from behind and a lonely stretch of road between Fayette and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  The car was made at the Ford plant in Köln and came with a German mineral water bottle lodged in a dark place in the trunk. Some inspector had overlooked it.
